3 months isn't actually that long. Keep in mind what the ankle is - a major hinge for movement and weight bearing. Recovery time depends on various factors, e.g. whether there has been previous injury, whether there was artery or nerve damage, and whether or not you required surgery. If a cast was required, this would mean longer recovery time as the ankle would need to be remobilised and strengthened.
Having said all that, a lot depends on just how much pain you mean. I would say expect some ongoing discomfort but see your doc if you mean severe pain.
