Hi, Hope this won't put too many of you off your hot chocolate! My friend and I have been considering colonic irrigation as we have head that it can be really beneficial for IBS, skin problems etc. As we have never done this before we are kind of nervous and just wondered if anyone had any personal experiences that they could share??? Any info would be great!

I haven't had personal experience but the complications here would put me off.
And I do not consider sticking a tube up the back passage and forcing litres of water in to the colon to be a natural practice. Enemas are bad enough.

Okay here goes:
About 30 years ago, I had an ulcer form in my rectum.
I had to take special granules on the morning of my visit to the hospital (for the x-rays). This was the most powerful laxative I've ever encountered. At the hospital, I was taken to a room where the sister stuck a large tube up my backside. Warm water was pumped into me (most uncomfortable feeling - bloating my stomach till I thought I was going to burst open), then it was released. This was administered several times, with the final one being cold water (even more discomfort than before). The sister was most sympathetic to my plight and couldn't "apologise" enough.
I don't think you would wish to hear what followed from this procedure.
It certainly would not be something I would undertake in your circumstances. I would have thought that IBS and skin problems is something you have because of what you put in (eat), not what you have taken out!

I imagine that colonic irrigation is similar to having a barium enema for internal bowell investigations and you will not enjoy having a graphic description of the end results of that !!
Quite honestly, I believe that if you are eating a healthy balance diet containting sufficient fibre and fruit and vegetables, you should not need colonic irrigation as your bowel movements should be regular and cleansing. Whilst I support many forms of "alternative therapy" I think colonic irrigation is probably just a fancy way of removing money from your wallet. Others may disagree.
