contraceptive pill

iv read all the info and stuff so im 99% sure im correct but i started takin the contraceptive pill on the first day of my last period which was about 2 and half weeks back now. i have since had sex a few times with my bf without protection because your protected from the first day of your period. even though i have read this in numerous places and the nurse told me this i just wanted to clarify that this is correct? out of interest how are you protected straight away, does that first pill just stop the next release of an egg? lol i know its a bit late to be checkin but im such a worrier and just need some reassurance x
