my friend took 50 nurophen tablets and ended up in A and E. It was too late to pump her stomach so they put her on a drip and took blooods to see what damage had been done. in the mean time the duty shrink came to asser her and decided she was not serious enough for admission and was sent home 6 hours later with a telephone number to call if she felf suicidal again.

she ended up trying again this time by drinking bleach and ended up in overnight for observation to make sure there was no permenant damage. this time duty shrink wanted to admit her but was over ruled by two other shrinks? (not too sure) who said she was fine to go home.

she then waited 3 months for an emergency councelling appointment to have 3 sesions to be told that the woman was leaving and there was no repacement as of yet
this was the north of england.
My Stepmum tried many times. She had always had mild depression but this started to escalate until she overdosed on paracetamol. She had a drip of sorts, which put her through agony as it flushed her organs and she had to be watched constantly as the pain was so bad she kept trying to pull the drip out. She stayed in for a couple of nights while they ran checks on her, mainly for her liver i believe, and then she was sent home with the recommendation of going to her GP about antidepressants.
They didn't really give a damn, even when she had PND after the birth of her last child, which sent her too far over the egde. She covered herself in white spirit (inhaling it too) in the bath and set fire to her self. Needless to say she died, but many hours later. As far as i am concerned the NHS have a gaping hole with regards depression and suicide attempts.
Appalling lack of care for and about people who suffer depression in hospitals.Girl I knew when I was young overdosed (intentionally) but the hospital decided it was just a junkie misjudging despite being told to the contrary. Discharged her after giving her a really hard time and 6 hours later she chucked herself off a bridge. This was because she had tried to come off drugs and her place at a rehab unit had been cancelled due to cut backs and as a result she thought they might take her children into care because her social worker had (wrongly) implied that.
It all depends on what the person has done as to what form of treatment they would get from the general hospital, then in theory they should be assessed by 1 of a number of teams either DSH (deliberate self harm), Crisis Team or on call Dr. It would then be up to these to as to which treatment path they would go down eg. Hospital in patient, out patients, continue to be reviewed by the crisis team, refered to the CMHT (community mental health team) or discharge. This is the general practice for the Co.Durham area
My friend slit her writst, pathetic attention seeking behaviour to be honest because hse didn't hurt herself that bad, although she has overdosed a couple of times in the past on pills which the hospital were made aware of. They checked her wrists then after about ten minutes sent her home.
I'm not friends with her anymore because she has **** all wrong in her life and a young son to take care of. She is just a selfish, attention seeking *****. However, I was still suprised at the hospital's attitude. Shouldn't they have gotten her some counselling or something?
