at the reception of a wedding when the best man etc do there speachers, does the groom HAVE to do a speach?

No-one expects you to be an expert public speaker or hilarious comic, your audience will be made up of friends and family, and it doesn't have to last long (in fact, they'll prefer it not to). Just say something vaguely witty for the boys (keep it clean), something romantic about your bride for the girls, and dish out lots of thank yous.

Nothing to worry about Dave, if you want to make things easier make the speech slightly funny {its a great ice breaker} these things seem to naturally work out well.
Your doing the hardest bit geeting married ie wedding vowels etc, when you walk out of that church you will be so relieved the speech will be a piece of cake, if it helps get some advice of your more serious mates who have got married.
Ps, have a shot of brandy, if nothing else it will certainly clear your throat.
