I have had psoriasis for about 8 years, i have tried many creams, steriods and i have recently tried PUVA light treatment, it worked whilst i was on the treatment but now i have finished it my psoriasis has come back.
The doctor now has recommened to me to take cyclosporin or methotrexate tablets. I am wondering if anyone has tried these tablets and if so if these have worked, also could you let me know what is the down side of these tablets and most of all which one you would recommened! Thank-you

Buer, having trouble posting so I'll have to do this in 2 parts!!

Hi, I also have psoriasisfor about 15 years and have been through the treatments that you've listed.

While in hospital last year, I was offered Methotrexate or Cyclosporin drug treatment, but declined due to the severity of possible side effects.
These drugs are also used in some types of Chemotherapy and CAN have the side affects commonly associated with cancer patients such as sickness/nausea, lethargy and possible hair loss - you will also need to consider the options if you are planning to have a baby in the near future as it is recommended that you do not try to get pregnant for up to 2yrs after coming off the drugs.

However, as always it is a personal choice, these drugs can be VERY effective in the treatment of psoriasis and different people react differently to drugs so you MAY NOT have the side affects. I would recommend that you speak to your consultant and they will be able to discuss all of the pros and cons of the drug and make a recommendation based on your history and your circumstances.

Also if you contact the Psoriasis Association or the National Psoriasis Foundation they may be able to advise you further.

i have had psoriasis about 13 years, if yo'ure psoriasis is mild to moderate methotrexate should be ok. i know a lot of people who have been on it, if you have kidney or liver problems you cant have it though. speak to your doc and ask for more information on it. if its bad u can go into hospital for a week and have dithranol treatment.
hiya DW.

I had the hospital treatment last year - I was in for 10 weeks over the summer! 8-(

the main reason I declined the treatment was because I wanted to have a baby next year but I have heard that the treatment is VERY good for moderate conditions. As you said, my sister was unable to have the drug treatment as she only has 1 kidney!!

Which type of Psoriasis do you have - linear or asymetric??.........I'm wierd, I've got both - I was a right guineau pig in the hospital as apperently thats quite rare!!

hi petesdragon, dont know the type name, its not hundres of spots it the large scaly patches, its very severe and i have hospital treatment as an in patient about three times a year, cant unserstand why u would be in hospital for it for ten weeks, thats strange, i've never been in for more than 2-3 weeks and i havd it pretty bad.
Good morning all,

Much as I hate anyone suffering with psoriasis, it's always nice to know it's not just you it drives mad! Over the passed 11 years I've tried creams and steroids, all of which start to work for the first few weeks and then make absolutely no difference thereafter. I use Oilatum after every shower and that helps with the appearance and flaking, but it's no cure.

I'm going to see a herbalist soon, a friend went and was given suggestions for changes in her diet and it seems to be working for her. This guy looks at what food stuffs you eat and then tells you which ones to cut out, what foods to add etc...

If it works I'll let you all know, I promise :o)
Hi,

I think the only reason I was in so long is coz it was really bad on the soles of my feet and I was having trouble walking until a lot of it was cleared up!!..this was the first time I'd been in hospital - only ever treated by GP before with all the usual creams!
