How Is This Done In The New Smarties Advert?
9 Answers
There is a new smarties t.v. advert where a little boy and his mum are saying whether or not there are additives in certain coloured smarties. It'snot a very long advert, but by the end, the mum is shaking the little boy sideways, like a tube of smarties. (as you do) I'm probably very oblivious to how this is done, but is there anyone out there who is clever enogh to make a good asumption as to how this shaking of the boy is done? (since you cannot actually, physically do this in real life. Unless of course you had the body of say, I don't know....... Hulk Hogan possibly ) I just think it's really clever, and would really like to know how that is perfected to convince the viewers at home.

The guy was covered in dots and this reprents where he in the back ground and then they can do whjat ever they want and it is recorded onto a computer and this can be edited to say turn the child sideways and the piece where she is shaking he is done without the boy and added after the advert is complete.
Thanks a lot for you answer. I think I can just about get the jist of what you said, in order to explain what happened.
If anyone could simplify this, it would make things a bit more easier . I might have known that computers were involved!
What you can get from technology these days. It's really just amazing!
Btw - just 2 things I'm a little unsure on.
1 - What is CGI? What does it mean please?
2 - You mentioned (and I quote) "The guy was covered in dots" - do you mean the little boy who supposedly looked like he was shaken, or do you mean some random other guy in the background who you don't actually see, since he would be the one covered in dots? (used to represent where the little boy is)
Thanks again for your reply.

CGI means Computer Generated Image, and it's basically special effects, like in films and so, and anything that looks impossible to really do is usually always done with CGI.
The dots (more like balls than dots) were probably placed on the boy himself (but in a studio, not right there) because they record movements and then use them to animate more realistically.

It is most likely that footage of the boy was shot against a green screen ( which can be removed to leave just the boy ) and the footage rotated and repositioned frame by frameto match the movement of the "mum"'s hand.
There would be no point in going to the expence of greating a computer generated boy when they had spent a day filming him beside his "mum".
We do a bit of that sort of thing here...

So, am I correct in saying that the positioning of the little boy (when he is turned sideways) and the shaking of him is all done by computer technology too?
I know what a green screen is, (I know it used to be blue screen, but professional fiming people seem to have it changed to green screen now. Does anyone know the reason for this?) though I'm not really sure why you say they would use this for such an advert. Please forgive me for not knowing.

I know how it was done they used a harness 2 wires at the back and 2 on each leg and then tiped him over they used larger clothes and put holes in them so the wires could go through then they used the wires to tip him over in postproduction the wires where rubed off. I know that is how they did it I was there.
Timnatsmum,
Thanks a lot for your answer.
These wires you mentioned - were they attatched to the boy with suckers on the end, or were they they attatched to the harness? How are they used?
I'm trying to imagine an image of a boy covered in wires and being strong enough to keep turning him around.
They must have been thick wires.
Also, please forgive me for asking, (I'm no film buff) but what is post production?
