Sorry rugely that wasn't directed at you, but it's just that everytime anyone mentions drug adddicts you always get the whole cacophony of calls for them all to be strung up, electrocuted, you name it and that's not going to do anything to tackle drug taking, the crime that's often associated with drug taking, getting the dealers off the streets and eliminating people's need to rely on any sort of substance in the first place.
My opinion is that there are several types of drug use, the first being recreational which a lot people do, Drs, managers etc amongst them, well respected people able to function very well who take drugs purely recerationally.
Then you have people who take drugs often but are not per se addicts like the regular ganja smokers some of whom will be using it as pain relief and some acid takers.
Then you have people who are addicted in the traditional sense, some of whom will be childrem drawn into as outlined in your other posting, and some of whom will be vulnerable adults with puppet masters who use their drug abuse to control them.
Some will be dealers who only deal to fund their own addiction and some will be dealers who don't take drugs themselves but who ensnare as many as possible to push up their customer base.
You cannot possibly treat all these people the same. Some need no action taking, some need help, and some need keeping off the streets at all costs, but the most important thing is that we need sensible strategies in place to stop people taking drugs in the first place, and at the moment these are notably lacking.
I am an ex drug and alcohol abuser but that didn't make me a write off as a person, and I mentor some ex addicts and employ others as I am all too aware that what saxy-jag says is right,it's nigh on impossible toget back into society and yeah some people do wander back to drugs, but a lot of the time given adequate support they don't, so for the most part we should give them that
