gel overlay over natural nails

im thinking of having gel applied over my natural nails to protect them, they ate a nice size with me now, but i know one of these days they are either going to split or chip - ive had gel and acrylic tips done but im not keen to have them now so was wondering if i could have just the gel put on - my local nail technician says she'd do it for me but has anyone had this done and did it work?
