How many....

Truthfully, how many ABers don't know the difference between:-

1) There, their and they're?

2) Were, wear and where?

3) Your and you're?

4) Our and are?

I can't believe my son has an A in GCSE and 1) can't spell very well - 2) doesn't know the difference between most of these.........

I do, and I really try to put the correct one when I do a reply here.

another one which is irritating is when you see "could of, would of"..etc instead of "could have" or "would have".

Sadly it does seem that not many schools see grammar or even spelling as a priority anymore- maybe why kids seem to rely more and more on text speak?

im just lazy when i type!! also i have quota time limit on my work computer so i have to type real fast before it flashes up and id have to type it all again!!!! no time for corrections for me!!

Seriously though angeldraws, the level of spelling and grammar is at an all time low. Even some of the teachers have a job sorting out the different words, but I believe the attitude is that it's not how you write but what you write, so most of the English 'laws' have gone by the wayside.

I can't say too much as my English has deteriorated considerably since becoming an AB'er. Bad Company!!!

i studied at college last year and couldn't believe the spelling and grammar of lecturers! the thing was people were copying off the board what was written and it did not make any sense! im always correcting spelling in my head and it really annoys me!!

Belonging to an older generation, my wife and I looked up some recent GCSE exam papers on the internet the other day. We concluded that we would have gained high pass-marks had we sat the same exams at the age of ten.

The one I find most annoying is the use of the apostrophe in plurals like - apple's ggrrrrr !

I must admit I get confused with too and to and really glad that google spell checker works in AB my spelling isn't the best the world, neither is my grammar or punctuation. I know I over use the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mark

What really annoys me is every year when the exam results are published, and the kids' grades are through the roof, that we are told that the standard of education is so much higher these days, that the teachers are working harder and the kids are also working harder. I have no intention in knocking the really bright ones who deserve their top grades, but the evidence is there for us all to see when we interview potential staff members who cannot string a proper sentence together. and they have exams grades that are in genius class.Soap box time, I know, but I find it very condescending whenI really grafted for my 4 A levels.

We home educate now after a series of rows with the kid's schools, one of which concerned my son whose teacher corrected his correct spelling of "leopard" to "leppard" as in Def.
She looked genuinely askance when it was pointed out to her but was not a bit apologetic about it. The standard of English is appalling in schools.

I am an ex-secondary school teacher and taught English and Drama.

It used to really bug me when GCSE students and A'level leavers still didn't know the difference between these very different words and used to spend hours trying to teach them correctly even have whole lessons once and term dedicated to grammar etc etc...

My head of dept. told me that for GCSE and SATs, we "Don't have time to teach all the intricacies of the Enlglish language, just get the texts taught and the coursework in and get them to type as much as possible so they can spell check!"

Unbelievable! I despair of it all.

I now homeeducate my kids.

(P.S, my even biggest bug of all time, is the inappropriate use of the apostrophe...still kids don't know how to use it. It drives me mental!)
