why so many answers to pointless questions?
22 Answers
Ive noticed that when people post real and proper questions, say about ones illness or facr finding questions dont get answered, but when others post pointless questions which dont help anyone and only serve to give pointless chat get naerly 100 answers.
What do others think? and no, my question is not pointless.

I for one tend to stay out of the serious illness ones, as I know next to nothing about anything medical and I wouldn't dream of going in it to have a chat, thus trivialising the question.
I do though see your point, I'm getting a teeny bit tired of the "I'm asking a question for the sake of it" kinda posts.

The chatty posts do keep some people coming back more often than perhaps they would if they only ever posted 1 serious question and never returned once it was answered.
It could be said that without the large number of 'regulars' that many questions may be overlooked.
I have rarely asked any questions but i have answered hundreds of serious questions as well as chatty ones.
Besides, keeping the chatty ones means that sometimes the list is slower to move down the page.

some questions are fun hence the chatting and some are more serious. They all get answered (most of the time anyway) so i doubt it really matters. You could never get someone asking a question about ,for example, a hair disaster and expect 100 replies because that many people just wouldn't be able to give helpful advice. Personally, i enjoy the mix of questions and answers. To me its what makes this site as good as it is. It is human nature to chat after all. I have never had a question go unanswered, serious or otherwise so all in all, everybody wins!
I have to agree with B00 here....I don't answer many fo the serious problem or medical type questions because quite simply, I often don't know enough to reply. I think where serious issues are raised, unless you can speak from a position of knowledge, it's often more helpful to say nothing, as incorrect advice could make the situation worse, not better. Whereas the chat questions...well any idiot (like me!) can answer them if they want, or ignore them if they want. I think it's wrong to assume chat questions are more "valued" than serious questions just because they get more replies, yet this seems to be the view of many on AB. Instead, I think the serious questions are treated with the respect they deserve and get generally only good, serious answers. Just because there may only be one or two answers, doesn't mean these are not very valuable, well thought out and welcome replies. Conversely, just because a chat post gets many, many replies, doesn't make it more worthy or more welcome to many ABers, it often just means a group of folk have had a bit of a laugh on a silly thread, nowt wrong with that.
Awww bless ya derek.
We'll convert you yet, before you know it you'll be discussing your sex life (I avoid those, I'm way too delicate) and pondering over what you should have for tea (now those I like, anything involving food is a winner as far as I'm concerned)
Now....would you like a cuppa? LOL ;-)
