it could be conjunctivitis - do you wake up with your eyes stuck shut? this is very contagious and you should get to the doc's asap as it can be passed to others.
You should try and not wear eye make up for as long as it clears.

Every night - clean the eye with just salt water and cotton wool.

My eyes got really infected and I cut out dairy products for a week and my eye healed well.
More on conjunctivitis here. Best to see your doctor, especially since some eye infections could permanently affect your vision if not treated.
You can get over the counter stuff for conjunctivitus now. Go to your local pharmacy and speak to them.
You can get a cream called Brolene from chemist which is excellent stuff but i would recommend two tubes - one for each eye so you don't cross contaminate, i used to get conjunctivitus quite regularly til i used this and it cleared up in two days. Put it on according to instructions before you go to bed. eyes will be sticky in morning but will wash away. also be careful about cross contaminating your eyes with your towels etc. If that doesn't do the trick you will have to visit your doctor
