why do we have toenails?
7 Answers
they serve no purpose; don't say protection cos else we'd have keratin elbows and kneecaps like rhinos; fingernails got plenty of uses but not toenails; i had a toenail removed for ingrowing; after soreness wore off, my toe was fine without nail for months till it grew back, ingrew again and made me wish i didn't have toenails; they don't protect nothing. also what function eyebrows? don't say to keep sweat out of eyes, cos if i get sweating it still gets in my eyes and i got thick eyebrows, and what about women who remove eyebrows and paint them back; how do they survive all the sweat?

I'm pretty sure that the eyebrows are a relic from our ape-like ancestors who used them as a semaphore to communicate before language evolved, pretty much like many of the new-world monkeys still do. We probably haven't lost them because they still come in useful to convey our moods to others without speaking.
Don't know why we still have toenails, but you are right, they are a &$^# nuisance.

Toenails are thought to be for the protection of the ends of ones toes which are very sensitive, as with fingernails and finger ends. Her's a link to answers to the same question;

Here is another interesting link which shows a use for both finger and toe nails;

Toe nails & Eyebrows - Proof that god is a man. He invented toe nails because he knew women would spend hours on them as well as their hair and finger nails etc..he also invented eyebrows for the same reason. This way man can get on with his day without interuption. So dont knock it...and your ingrowing?? Well its just a hazard of having them as well. OH!! why do men have them?? So it does not look suspicious to the women. shh!!
Being a regular shopping trolley pusher, I am very grateful for toenails. To avoid ingorwn ones, you need to file them often. I am appreciative that I have "two" fine, overplucked eyebrows and have sometimes noticed in the mirror that there are crumbs or fluff or other foreign bits caught in them...
