I'm convinced that I remember being born. Not vividly but I have these memories of being afraid and feeling clostraphobic and not wanting to do something, also of being upside down. Anyone else have the same experience?

No..none at all... my first memory is of eating icecream on the beach I think.
In the least offensive way I can muster, it sounds a bit nuts to me.
er no!
i have trouble remembering yesterday never mind 22 year ago bet its pretty cool rembering somethin like that tho
Are you autistic by any chance? Not wishing to offend or anything but i have read somewhere that many autistic people claim to be able to remember their births? Please don't take this the wrong way but don't think many other people can remember

Interesting Goodsoulette. What is everyones first memory?
That's just weird!! I'm not actually sure that such a memory would be possible, why would you be afraid, as of yet you would have no concept of anything happening to be afraid of and why claustrophobic, you would have known nothing other than a confined space and you will have been upside down since you became engaged in the birth canal, some few days prior.

I would imagine these memories are in association with other experiences later in life.

But I may be wrong??
i remember my 4th birthday at nursery with a little cake and some jelly
I'm not sure if mine is a memory or not but I think I can remember lying in a pram with my sister sitting on a pram seat above me (old fashioned pram) and I was pulling her pig tails.

Am I just remembering the memory or the actual time it happened, I'm not sure.

No, I don't remember being born and I think Ratter's thoughts are valid. How do we actually know what the first thing is that we remember from thoughts in our own minds, without having overheard anecdotal evidence from others, i.e. our parents? I think it is probably impossible to clearly discern between the memories we have from our childhood that are made up from anecdotal evidence - and those our brain has stored at the point we witnessed or did something ourselves. Hence, I find it hard to believe that you can remember your birth. Fascinating subject though!
I used to have a recurrent nightmare up to the age of about five. It was as though i was constantly moving forward toward the narrow end of a funnel, but never getting there. The walls of the funnel were dull mixed swirling colours in constant motion. They were exactly like what you got if you mixed different colours of plasticine or play-dough together. In the end, I got used to it, and was able to bring on the image voluntarily without any fear.
Very much later in life, I looked back at this, and I wonder to this day if it was a latent memory of my being born.
no i dont remember but this is weird too sometimes well about 4 or 5 times i've had these feelings or thoughts. i seem to have memories or something like that, of me or someone close to me being an old womanin incredible pain and fear, and a feeling of nurse being cruel and bruising me. this scares me when i yhink about it too much. i'm only 49 by the way.
it sounds like youve put your own fears in with the image of beig born, as like RATTER15 said you wouldnt feel chlostrophobic etc as it was what you were used to... perhaps you may remember it... in some odd spooky way... but you definatly are placing fears developed later in life onto the image....

it could also be a mixture of old memories or even a memory of a dream...

just a thoguht
Are you sure you are not remembering something that may have happened to you when you were a small child?

perhaps you locked yourself in a wardrobe or something like that?

I have very vivid memories dating back to when I was 2 in 1981 putting myself in hospital for eating poisonous berries my elder sister was using for a collage, i thought they were blackberries but were actually rowan berries.

I can remember lots of people names conversations and events but definitely not being born.

I hope your not repressing some horrible memory?
My earliest memory i can recall is of me lying in a cot in the dark and i remember seeing my feet waving about. I remember my cot was next to a white wardrobe and thats all. It lasts about 5 or 6 seconds. Don't know how old i was. Also I really dont know if this is a true memory or something i just thought up :S I would like to think people can have memories of earlier ages like 1 or 2 though.
no reason why you shouldn't remember it; most people's earliest memories get crowded out by later ones, but it ain't necessarily so. The fact that you remember feelings rather than facts sounds very plausible, since you wouldn't have actually known what was going on at the time.
