Cat Obsession

My cat is obsessed with food. Every time he comes in from the garden he goes straight to his bowl, he is a bit ginger moggie and has always been the same, but it is now becoming an obsession. He is well fed twice a day and a little treat before he goes to bed - he is a big boy! I think he is possibly bored, a bit of a loony cat who jumps and bites a lot although he is playing, quite a handful really. How can I calm him down ? Every single time I get out of my chair he is behind me at his bowl. He just can't seem to relax like 'normal' cats. Thanks everyone.

Cats are grazers by nature, and will eat little often, the behaviour you describe certainly seems normal to me. One point you mention, is the fact he always goes to his bowl after being out in the garden, when he is in the garden he will be watching the wildlife, this by nature will make him think of food, usually at this point wild cats will kill and eat or store their prey, but our lazy by nature domestic felines will supress this urge by eating a bit from the bowl. I would be more concerned if he wasnt eating. I would though (if his appetite is huge) let him graze on a more lower fat dry food, this is usually branded as "senior" by the more known brands, just make sure plenty of water is at hand.

mine does this all the time, she's happy to laze about on the sofa with me but the minute i get up, shes up and straight to the food bowl

He is five years old, and yes I always leave water out. He loves Felix, and I give him white fish fillets from Tesco - frozen but thawed - and he loves the new Perfect Fit Active dry biscuits for Adventurers which he certainly is !! Should I give him more dry food rather than Felix? He doesn't crunch it tho, he eats like a labrador ..

a Balanced diet is important, most dry foods are complete and require no other acompliment. because your cat has been reared on a mix I would recommend feeding two wet meals a day (not a whole can each sitting, the more he stretches his stomach the more he will eat each time), and compliment this with a measured amount of Iams dry food for him to graze on through the day. Iams dry food or similar is a complete cat meal, and is put together from quality products and suppliments, its slightly more expensive but this encourages you to measure the amounts you give.

Trouble is if I give him more than two saucers of food a day, say morning and evening, my hubbie keeps moaning that I am feeding the cat too much, that he only needs two meals a day, so if I secretly feed him when Hubbie is out, the cat expects it all the time !! Are two meals a day enough, plus a few biscuits at night time ?? I only give him, say, half a saucer of Felix morning and evening but piled up if you know what I mean.
