I've recently started going to a gym. I'm not overweight and not unfit (well maybe a bit unfit). On the machines they give your heart rate and I was a bit alarmed when mine went up to 140 when I was doing what I thought was quite moderate exercise (treadmill - fast walking) Is this normal?

At the gym I attend the heart rate on treadmills etc. is very erratic - wouldn't depend on it being accurate if I were you.
My heart rate goes up to 170/180 when i go to the gym and i look like i'm going to have a heart attack so don't be worried at 140 ....unless you look like you are having a heart attack as well ...LOL
140 is not bad if you're around 40, even better if younger. Mine is normally that on the treadmills after nearly 4 years and only changed when I got tachycardia when it went to 180. I don't know the perfect range but I had to take beta blockers to get mine down again, but 140 for a beginner is fine.

If you are at all worried, see your doctor and get advice.
