nose job / rhinoplasty
7 Answers
I have my dad's nose . It looked fine on him but being female, it doesn't look good on me. Or at least, I don't think it does. So I'm thinking of having it 'done'. Has anyone been through this? If so, how much did it hurt and how long did the bruising last for? And were you happy with the end result?

However, friends of mine have had it done, and although the result is excellent - it just does not seem right! It seems to have taken away some part of their facial character. Imagine Barbara Streisand without that distinctive nose!
Unless your nose is large to the point of obstructing your vision (yes it does happen) or particularly horrific, I would advise you to leave well alone.
A good haircut can make all the difference, in a pain free way.

My friend has had two nose jobs (the first one made the nose look like an onion. a lesson in itself already...). The first time he would out of it for a while, was in bed for at least a week. I think he was in a fair amount of pain as well. However, the second operation was not at all the same. He was out of hospital the same day, and came out drinking the next night, he said he just felt fine. I suppose the differences in recovery time will have been dependent on the type of operation, time etc.
If you were really serious about this, I'd maybe look at the advertisements at the back of magazines like Cosmo and Marie Clair, they always have adverts for Transform Medical Group and the like. You could speak to someone who would be able to tell you exactly what you'd need to have done (which might put you off... all the breaking bones etc...) and the resulting pain.
A lot of people are against plastic surgery in principle, but I've always thought that if you've got the money to go private and you think it'll make you happier than you were before, then there's no harm in going for it.

I had one done when I was 16 because my consultant decided it was an odd shape and would look better (I should explain that I was getting my lip fixed because I have a cleft lip). It hurt like mad but they give you strong painkillers. The only thing now is that I wish i'd not had it done, i'm 22 and still haven't got used to it! I don't know why but I compare it to my old nose and it's sooo different, lovely but different!
I hope that this isn't too much info but they broke my nose inside and reshaped it unside to reduce the scars. I had my nose in a plaster thing which had a piece of gauze taped underneath to collect blood (told you that it's too much info!) I also had stitches underneath the nostrils which had to be taken out about two weeks later and that hurt more than when I got out of theatre! Oh and I was really lucky beacuse I didn't have too much bruising though the girl who was in the next bed to me looks like she had had a fight with a rugby team!
I hope that I haven't put you off. If you really want it done i'd look around. Some companies even scan a picture of your face in to the computer and then show you what different types of nose shape would look like on your face.
Good Luck!!

My sister recently (well - last year) had hers done and its fantastic - Im thinking of having mine done as a result
first thing I wanted to tell you is if you DO go for it, stock up on Arnica tablets. The surgeon may reccomend it and MAY provide you with some depending on where you go, but if not you can buy it from boots and most chemists, its a plant extract which minimises bruising and heals bruises in half the usual time - you take it 1 a day for two weeks before surgery, then continue taking it for two to three weeks after. My sister did and all the bruising she had was a faint yellow crescent under one eye which went after 5 days
Second, She was in agony for the first week - its a major op so dont expect to be back to your usual self in a few days of having it done - and sore for a further 2 weeks. She had to take two weeks off (they'll probably tell you this in a consultation) because for the first week youre not supposed to move your head very much, or it can cause it to bleed more than it should
However, a good surgeon will make you a nose that will suit you so dont worry about it looking too alien, and if it bothers you you shouldnt stay with it when you can do something about it - lifes too short to spend it in a body youre unhappy in and wishing you had gone for it in years to come
All the best
