Like if someone said the sky was falling in, you'd probably want to look outside and then get squashed by a bit of falling sky, all because it's a bit out of the ordinary. Same with ghosts....except I've not heard of anyone being squashed by a ghost (yet).
Anyway, obligatory ghost stories...
- Many moons ago when I worked in a pub/restaurant and used to clean the kitchen at the end of the day, I was mopping away when a figure ran through the door from the back passageway, ran partly through the microwave and then vanished a couple of feet before the veg store.
This figure was a kindof mucky white/grey, a bit transparent and not a lot of detail like clothing that I could make out, but I'm pretty sure it was a guy probably early teens going by the height and body build, but that's kindof educated guesswork as he would have fitted a stablelad and those kitchens were the stables of the pub originally.
The odd thing was, he was going much faster than you could in reality, although I've since discovered that they can sometimes just appear & disappear virtually instantly. I guess when time doesn't affect you then it's not as much of a problem.
Anyway, in total I saw him 4x in the kitchen although months apart, but I did start to wonder if something like a rouge car light from the road could have caused it. Not easy due to distances, levels and such.
So many months went by until one night I was in the back passage which led to the back yard and some stairs. I shut the back door, turned round and he ran from the stairs, right behind me and round into the kitchen. There was only a rather poor little light there, no external lights and he was very clear that time. I left the job not that long afterwards so have no idea if he's still there.

Part 2...
As for changing peoples ideas - well, as far as I know I'm the only person who saw that ghost, but one of the bar staff who thought I was totally nuts had to stay there while the owners were away.
One morning he dragged me outside, pointed at the outside of the upstairs corridor and told me that as he was locking up a really cold gust of wind came down the corridor. In an old building you get drafts, but non of the windows open and there's a heavy door half way down the corridor which didn't move.
I had to go through all the rooms upstairs after that to check it was clear before he'd sleep there again. Never seen anyone change their minds so quickly...
