Energy.

I'm averaging about four hours sleep a night because I'm a bit busy. I'm drinking a lot of water to stop me feeling tired, but aside from sleeping for more hours, what is a natural way to get more energy? (Bearing in mind I have 1 to my name).

I have survived on 5 hours per night for may years without any problems at all but I do lie in when I can and sometimes have a 15 minute doze at lunchtime whihc seems to freshen me up for the afternoon.
Giving up booze and fags (if applicable) also helps as both used to make me tired.

The trick is to find the length of your sleep cycle. The average sleep cycle is 4 hours and normally a person will complete to full sleep cysles in a night (which explains why one often wakes at 3 or 4 am) If you are forced to wake up in the middle of your sleep cycle then you will find yourself tired and low on energy. It is better to complete one full cycle than 1 and a half. However not everyone's sleep cycle is 4 hours I have found mine to be about 5 hours which means I can wake up after 5 or 10 hours sleep perfectly refreshed (and have survived for a number of years on 5 hours a night) but anything inbetween is a struggle. So it may be that your cycle is either longer or shorter than 4 hours. Incidentally the above explains the common idea of 8 hours sleep being the ideal amount and also why often when you wake up at say 6am you feel wide awake... go back to sleep for and hour or two and then find it really difficult to get up.
diet is important, eat a high carbohydrate diet as this will give you extra energy. ensure though that your diet is also balnced with a mixture of protein, vitimins and minerals. when you get up have a good breakfast and make sure you have about 40min in the morning to wake up. have a wash, breakfast etc. that should put you on your way.
