maggots

My son was going fishing with some friends who called for him, his friend had a carton full of maggots unfortunately he dropped about 50 maggots in my sons room, as you can imagine i was horrified and attempted to pick them up, in the evening i found another two lurking about, and i was sure that i had found them all, a week or two on i have only found one , a very dark one dead, can maggots burrow under carpets and survive, then surface? have you any idesas what i should spray on the carpet, do you think that i have seen the last of them?

How awful, I have no answer but I would have been more than horrified, I would hope they couldn't survive as I thought they only lived on meat.

i think the dark brown one you found may have been the maggot in its chrysalis, before turning into a fly. Even if you have missed a couple all that will happen is that they will turn into a fly. Just make sure there is no food laying about in your sons room and if the flies appear just kill them or shoo them from the house.

Why the worry, they won't hurt you and they aren't particularly dirty or disease carrying. They're just baby flies. Surely you have some of them in your house?

Faced with lack of food, if large enough they'll pupate (go dark brown and solid), else just die.

A week or two later should see any remaining maggots turn into flies and buzz off - via the chrysalis or 'caster' stage...

The ones you get for fishing are sterilised anyway, so don't worry about disease. They'll all fly away later.

I dropped a whole tub of maggots on my bedroom floor years ago when I was hand-rearing some baby sparrows, absolutely disgusting things maggots, and I tried to hoover them all up with my Mum's Dyson. Obviously this wasn't the best idea and they went everywhere! This post just reminded me of that story - nothing bad happened, no ill smells or anything, so don't worry pink!
