Winter Garden Plants

My back garden is low maintenence having a patio,path and the rest is gravelled.I have recently got rid of all of the summer plants from my containers and I am wondering what to plant to replace them .I want some plants which will flower at least all through December through to the end of January/early Feb.I am going to the garden centre this weekend so any input would be great.I have four tubs (half moon sort of shape) on my fence,so any plants which flower AND trail a little bit would be lovely.I also have a triple basket container,large tub at bottom,medium in the middle and small on top, and several tubs to fill.HELP !

Hi Whitbybabe, What imediately springs to mind is winter pansies, they have a wide range of colours and I think, the best of all for winter/spring flowers. You could plant a spring bulb between each plant, so you have something to look forward to, maybe ? Good Luck Tbird+

Pansies are a lovely splash of colour in winter as Tbird says.
I have got these half moon shaped planters on the shed and have put trailing ivy in with the pansies.It's good because it's ever green and come the summer will set of summer bedding like geraniums,petunias etc.Primulas are nice too in tubs with ivy again and a dwarf conifer in the middle.
Ivy again in the basket thingy with winter heathers and polyanthus.Shove a few crocus and miniature daffs and narcissi bulbs hither and thither and you should have a nice display.

Hi whitby, Just to add to Tbird's suggestions how about - inyour four half moon tubs some Violas or Pansies mixed with varigated trailing ivy. I would fill triple basket with mixed primroses which will give a real splash of colour. Other tubs could be filled with Mysotis (forget me nots) and plant some mini dafs (tete a tete) in amongst. Dont overwater!! cheers skylight
