Why is it that I get hearburn whenever I haven't eaten for several hours? A Rennie sorts it out, but it's not ideal!

Build up of acid levels in the stomach with nothing to work on. Regular(small) meals/snacks help prevent and are better than antacids for you esp. in the long run.
