Congratulations Spurslady, you elicited over 100 answers. What does that tell you about the human condition? Do we not all have a deep yearning for God, that only God can satisfy? We try to anaesthatise our feelings with consumerism, forms of spirituality, attempt to display our own self sufficiency, but deep down we KNOW there is more.
whiffy - i am not the only person who thinks theman is talking claptrap - it is there for you to see so be under no illusion that it is just me

i really don't see how what i have said has anything to do with islam, or britains take on it.

that is a lame attempt to shift the argument - even for you whiffey.

theman - yes you are preaching - others have said it and you have admitted it.

your arguments are laughable "ooh what if you die, ooh are feeling uncomfortable..." - pathetic

i will not adopt a religion because you are lamely trying to scare me into it with threats of hell and damnation.

if you wish to spend your life in fear because of the words written in some dusty old book - you go right ahead.
Forgive me for offending you by preaching.
When is stating the facts preaching, and when is it not?
If I saw you out in the street, about to be run down by a truck, I would try and shout you a warning.
Well, that's what I'm doing. Shouting a warning.
Please tell me, from where do you get your moral authority, the knowledge of right and wrong. Is it built in to you? Did you learn it? Is your highest authority a mere man?
joko and the like are the voice of the 21st century. I for one don't find Theland laughable, so please joko demote your global assumptions to local ones. [edit by ABED]

Dusty books may well have a distinguished ancestry. You mock ? Examine the evidence, then mock, if you still can.
I do not spend my life in fear, but in hope, that is faith, and enduring certainty that my sin is forgiven. I probably needed more forgiveness than all of you, so I celebrate all the more.

I guess some of you do not believe that you have a soul. That's sad.
The state of Israel was formed in 1948, fairly recent, yet its formation and the ingathering of the Jews to the land was prophesied in the old Testament. Wow! The prophecies are unfolding as we speak - Lebanon, Gaza, West Bank etc.
So, the bible is a book apart from other books.
No other so called holy Scripture, (Koran etc) has such prophecies that are verifiably accurate.
If those bits are true, why not the rest?
since when is knowing right and wrong about god?

to say that people cannot know right and wrong unless they are religious is ridiculous

you admit you are shouting - and shouting at people, when it is not wanted, to try to make them change their beliefs is preaching.

at least you are writing like you are talking to someone now, not just copying out random quotes.

global assumptions? whiffey climb down off your high horse. Like i said there is a lot of others who agree with me

yes i have 21st century ideas because guess what - i am a 21st century girl!!

you may want to live by the word of uneducated people who believed the earth was flat, that the sun fell into the sea every night and that draining people of their blood was the best way to cure them - but i don't.

this is one of those things that could go on all night, to no conclusion, so lets not get into this eh?
prophecies?

ever heard of nostradamus?

same thing could be said for him - is he god?
Nostradamus was wrong. People equated the quatrain that contained "Hister" with Hitler, when Hister was an ancient name for a river, the Danube, I think.

Also, I believe in God, and also his adversary, the Devil, who can empower some people to duplicate miracles, prophecies, for his own ends.
Joko - I have never known right from wrong, unless by a rule from a higher authority, and what inside me, "feels" right. So where do these feelings come from?
We save lives in hospitals, but in the jungle the weak become dinner for the strong, so don't look to so called evolution as a source of right / wrong, otherwise the lions would be opening intensive care units for injured Wildebeast!
Where do you get YOUR standards from? Has God written them on your heart, or did you make them up as you journeyed through life?
If you think I'm wrong and you are right, then please share your knowledge with me, so I can believe in something (supposedly) better.
Theland is tired and in need of beauty sleep, but looks forward to reading more of your comments, generated of course by Spurslady, who asked the original question.
Goodnight all - it has been a great pleasure talking to you.
"If you were to die right now, would you KNOW where you were headed? Are you absolutely confident that you will be O.K.?..."

I have to say that for me this is the most profound point you have made to date, Theland (p.s. I thought you were a woman!!). This question does bother me from time to time. I was raised a Catholic so a lot of my faith is instilled in me.

I am completely aware that I haven't been to confession, or church, for years now. I even made a promise to myself in January last year to attend church, but I haven't. But I have to be honest when I say that I could never be a regular church-goer. I just don't believe in praising God like a sheep. If I want to sit down and communicate with God I will do it with Him direct, I don't feel the need to go through a priest. And I certainly would never preach my beliefs to others.

Everyone is individual and if they choose to be an atheist or live a life of debauchery and go to hell as a consequence, then so be it.

Wow what the hell didI start here?

I think in the future I will keep my big mouth shut!!!

Happiness resides not in posessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul.

Great thread spurslady. ;o)
Champagne - Good points, but stay away from the RC church as it is a cult and a gnostic religion, giving equal weight to scripture AND tradition.

Notfrom-oz - Spot on with your observations.

Spurslady - What have you started? You have stumbled across the great hunger in PEOPLES SOULS and people try to fill it with anything but God - but nothing but God will satisfy.
Question Author
Hello the land and how are you today? have you recharged your batteries?
Spurslady - Yes thank you. I had a good kip, got the kids up for school, and went back to bed for an hour this afternoon for a siesta. A weeks holiday at the moment.
Batteries half charged - very busy house this.
Tell me, is everybody enjoying the search for an answer to Spursladys' question? My thread on heaven and hell is so similar, and I feel a mild annoyance if not the beginning of anger in one or two replies.
Life is like a library owned by the author.
In it are a few books which he wrote himself,
but most of them were written for him.
