I am looking into decorating my conservatory. Can anybody tell me what is the psychology behind having wicker or cane furniture. I admit, such adornments are there now as it was the done thing. But why?

There are uncomfortable, a fire hazzard, flimsly, collect dust and not priced much less than normal furniture.

Is it wrong to put a nice Chesterfield in a conservatory, and why do people still buy cane stuff?

wood is warm and energy filled

cane and wicker are woody
Absolutely no idea but you're right - everybody I know who has a conservatory has cane furniture in it!!Possibly because they are cooler rooms in winter than rest of house and so cane wouldn't get damp??

I think a Chesterfield is an excelllent idea - how about adding a few occasional tables and mabe a lamp or two - with a few books scattered here and there??

xx
so tempting to answer ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
crete!! refrain, as shall I.
I guess it has that colonial look - but there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't put a sofa in there. Except that it'll probably get really warm in there during the summer (and might fade in bright sunlight).
Maybe its just in case you get locked in your conservatory and I've never tried this by the way but cane furniture could be edible. Not the cushions though!
In my conservatory I have a corner bar with stools and optics, posters of Torremolinos, a curved Sony chrome music centre, IKEA rockers, and a plastic palm tree, as befits the area.
p.s hello crete, I thought you'd gone on holiday :)

Chesterfield is far to big for a conservatory!!! start with a hamlet and work up to a village tell them to leave the idiot at home as youre already in there.
Are people with conservatories in denial of the fact that they have too much money? So to salve their conscience, they stick a shack, sorry, conservatory on the back of their spread, furnish it with wicker and cane, and pretend to live like 19th century farm labourers, eating bread and cheese, and supping out of pewter tankards, taking in the view of the countryside, which they own of course, it's their garden!
Just a thought.
what a very kind hearted, christian answer, theland...or should i say...mmm?

Life is full of real problems like this. Wicker or cane? Caravan or boat? Sun or ski? And drop 10p in the charity box for good measure.
Theland, this is actually an invented problem, but your charitable and perceptive thoughts are well expressed.
Can you give us a list of questions that we are allowed to ask then?

Just so we don't annoy you
Yes, would I enjoy sitting in a wicker chair in a conservatory?
