The fan draws in room air and passes it over a cooling coil or plate which condenses the moisture in the air. The moisture drips into the holding tank, which you empty periodically. Most have a shutoff float in the tank to keep it from overflowing onto your floor.
Dehumidifiers help remove excess moisture from the air. This is especially helpful if you live in a humid climate or if your home has recently had a leak or flooding. Excessively moist air can cause mold and dust mites to thrive in your home, causing allergic reactions and triggering severe asthma symptoms.
