kennel cough jab

As you probably know I have 2 shih-tzus. My daughter is getting married in June and it is going to be quite hectic and we will be away from the house for a good while so we decided to put them into kennels for the weekend. They have been in kennels before but a friend recomended one closer to home. They insist on them having a kennel cough jab, they have never had one before. I have been in contact with my vet and he says there's no problem. I am still a bit worried as it is a spray that goes up their nose and they have very flat noses. Will they be ok do you think? They last thing I want is to cause them any more stress other than a couple of nights in the kennels.

Both my shar peis have "the snort" before going into kennels, most kennels insist to protect the other dogs too, it doesnt seem to affect their appetites none and I beleve its best done 14 days before they go and its best not to let them mix with other dogs in the park etc for that 14 days.
Do you live within 1 hour tavelling of Ely. Cambs if so I can recommend the best kennels/dogs hotel ever, we travel 2 hrs to get there because we would not leave them anywhere else, cant bear the thought of them just shut in a cage.

This is a vaccination that I would recommend, some may differ without the Kennel Cough injection you are exposing your dog to infectious diseases like canine infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough)

The injection itself it not like an injection!!!And it is over before you know it.

The Kennel Cough vaccine shouldn't be a problem for any dog. The dogs are just never very happy about it!!

I have to say that I am not too happy taking them for it but I would be even more unhappy if not devestated if anything happened to them. I will get them done about four weeks before the wedding to they have time to forget about it.

It seems to be getting to be the norm at most kennels. I know from experience that dogs don't like it but it only takes a second and is far more preferable to your beloved dogs getting the infection. Some of the vaccines are only good for 6 months but I think there is one manufacturer's that last for 10 so ask your vet, at least this will mean the experience happens less frequently if you regularly board.

I rememberd that I used to go on a dog forum and posted the question on there also. A couple of people have said that their dog actually had KC after having the vacination and when said that their dog was very ill. This is getting very worrying. I want to enjoy the wedding but I also want to know my dogs are safe.

I have decided to put my dogs into the kennel which they have been to before. It is a little further away but not too far. They do not insist on the KC jab. I am still worried as I have heard both sides of the coin but I am going with my instinct and pray I do the right thing.

Provided they are healthy when they go in, should they catch kennel cough, a course of antibiotics would soon clear it up. Usually only very young and old dogs are at greater risk.

I'd rather take the risk than expose them to an extra trip to the vets, where you don't know what they will catch!

When I worked in kennels we insisted that dogs did NOT have the kc jab within two weeks of coming in, as they used live vaccines and there was the danger that they could give it to the other dogs.

lankeela That is exactly how I feel. It is bad enough having to kennel them so I just don't feel like I can put them through further stress. The kennels where they are going, seem to think along those lines also that they can catch it anywhere.
