Hitting the gym...
19 Answers
I had a programme done a while ago, and it explicitly states that I should do all weights/resistance before doing the cardio stuff. Is this right, and if so why?

It makes absolutely no difference what order you do you CV or weights in.
Most people do CV first because you must warm up, which usually involves a CV machine. Therefore they just stay on it after warm up.
So...................as long as you warm up and give your complete body a slight wake up call, it makes no odds.
Why not just vary it every visit? It will alleviate the boredom of a gym with crappy MTV music, the smell of sperm and more people treating it like a fashion contest.

Hi Chrissiekins, weights first, if you do a lot of cardio you may be too tired to pay attention to correct form when doing weights, which can result in injury. Just make sure you do an adequate cool down, after cardio, before stretching. Also doing your weights first uses up gycogen in the muscles, making your cardio session more effective in burning fat (not carbs).
No disrespect to Disco Al, but this is the very reason I am so anti-gym.
As well, as worrying about your glycogenic rates why not consider your carbo-inductive metabolic resting rate? Also, consider your respiratory cardiogramic systolic function (but only after absorbing sufficient proteinous thermagenic foodstuffs ofcourse)
The rates that these gym instructors mention are often cited from USA led research. Yes, most are probably correct, but they will only affect the most prolific of gym users and professional sports people.
The only scientific research you have to worry about is your heart rate. Learn the rates and whilst doing CV work, work to around 60 percent of your MAXIMUM heart rate. The formula is simplified in heartbeats. Your ABSOLUTE maximum is 220 minus your age. That is if you are 20 years old your max heartbeats per minute is 200. Work to 60 percent of these, thus achieving 120 bpms. Not hard, and not vigorous. This is your fat burning or Cardial zone.
Any more (up to 200 bpms will strangely not burn fat. It will use your explosive reserves, i.e protein.
Likewise under 120 bpms (assuming you are 20 years old) will not really have a great effect on health or weight management.
Trust me, I could write a book on the myths and downfalls of the bloody gym.
It will make no odds what order you do your CV or weights in, at your level. The gym instructor, with his 40 hair cut (if a bloke) clearly read it once in his copy of Muscle Flex, which he masturbates over.

Blimey, such an innocuous question too! Can't help that the mere mention of 'gym' brought out the testosterone in both of them.
Al - come back. Not all AB-ers are like this, yes the chat sometimes gets a bit silly, but at times like that you just have to sit back and let all the silly-billys get on with their meaningless posts. (No offence to you Wardy, your reply was most insightful ;oD)
Thanks for moderating Dotty :o)

No, I'm not a regular...just a new person who is REALLY fed up of all the clever comments when I just need some help with things and just blew when another happened, for which I apologise. I'm not a man, so, Wardy, your assumptions are totally wrong.
As for the 60% of max. heart rate, Chrissieskins, you will never get fitter if you stay within your fat burning level. You have to push yourself. I have been exercising both in the gym & out (winter is too much sometimes) for over 15 years and I am a qualified aerobics instructor, so I can assure you that my knowledge comes from real life (& not just theory because I'm bitter, fat, bald and live with my parents & would not dare step foot in a gym, Wardy..also I cant believe someone still actually says end of!!!!)
Its taken me a little while to realise, but now, I get that, while a lot of ABers genuinely need to know an answer to a question, MOST ABers are, in fact, middle-aged losers or school kids with nothing to do.
Therefore, my final advice, before I unregister, to all of you sad bs who hang around on body & soul, is; instead of sitting alone on your computer in your pretend life, go out & get yourselves a REAL life.

Mmmmmm where preytell have I assumed you are a man. Anyway thank you for coming back so swiftly. I know now whatever petty argument you tried to initiate, I have clearly won.
And whilst we are talking about losers, perhaps you should look for a better job? An aerobics instructor is not really a job is it? You are fairly eloquent, so maybe become a secretary??
All the best, but we both know you will be back in another guise or your usuusual one.
And chrissiekins, I talk the truth 60 percent (there abouts) is absolutely fine. Admittedly I have not been on a two day course with no pass or fail to become an aerobics instructor, neither would I work for about 10 per hour watching a load of lycra jump up and down.
Disco Al, I think the readers know which one is bitter. Thank you for your humour and realisation that people still believe being a QUALIFIED aerobics instructor in something to aspire to. Well done. Your bank manager must be proud.

middle aged, fat, balding, loser who still lives my parents.

Well, thank you both for your comments (I think). I'm just sorry it escalated into this farce. Disco Al - I only come on here once in a while for advice. I agree with you in that I do think a lot of people spend *way* too much time on here asking stupid, pointless questions, talking stupid pointless sh*te, and it can get a little cliquy. That's their choice though.
Btw, if you're an aerobics instructor - I for one believe you ;0D
