I don't think you are actually supposed to cut ingrowing toenails! I think they have to be surgically removed before they get infected. Although I have heard a way to prevent happening is to cut your toenails straight across, but I guess it's a bit late for that now!
Also, my doctor told me when I had them ingrowing nails, years ago at 13, that you can cut a "V" shape in the middle of the nail, and as the nails grow they will try to pull back together and un-ingrow - if that's a word!
Please don't you will do more harm than good, see a chiropodist or your Dr.
Yes, I agree PG - You must see a good chiropodist straight away as I doubt if your Dr will have the facilities (or the time) because it takes a good half an hour. The whole toenail is not removed, just each side. Do take proper advice - and in the meantime if it's infected soak in a bowl of warm water and Savlon.
If its in-growing then you've probably been cutting them too short anyway... wouldn't advise cutting them any more. Don't bother with a chiropidist, you need a Dr, you'll probably get referred to hospital for a minor op to remove part of the nail and stop it growing into the flesh surrounding the nail - not a particularly nice procedure to watch, but they give you good local anaesthetic... moral of the story???? don't cut your finger nails down too much!!!
My husband has sufferred with ingrowing toenails since he was a child and it had nothing to do with cutting his nails too short. They are extremely painful and must be treated by a doctor.
