40's Style Make Up
5 Answers
I'm off to a wedding and the dress I have bought is a green 40's style number from Monsoon, I've arranged to have my hair done in a 40s style too but I'm stuck about the make up. Normally if I were to wear green, I'd have green eyeshadow to match but I'm not sure if thats in keeping with the 40's, the thing that worries me is looking OTT - I dont want to take the 40's thing too far - its not a fancy dress party after all!
Can anyone point me in the right direction of websites that can help or does anyone else have experience in this?

I couldn't really find any websites that would help, but i have Dita Von Teese's book "Burlesque and the art of the teese" and in there she says how to create the various makeup looks from the 1920's to the 1950's. for a 40's look, you need to go for very pale/ovory foundation and powder with a matte finish. for the eyes, liquid liner, flicked out at the corners if you want and maybe some pale eyshadow near the lash line - she suggests ivory, lavender or baby blue shades, though i didn't bother with powder as i was wearing false lashes also. eyebrows need to be fairly thin and highly arched and defined in pencil, you will also need a rose blush. Boots Number 7 do a nice one called "petal". for the lips you need them to be red (whichever shade suits you), define them with a lipliner, try and make your pout kind of "square" with defined cupids bows and a fairly flat line along the bottom. I also had a 40's style hairdo and nails - the nails should also be red, rounded and with the moons of your nails left bare or painted pale white. if you can get sight of a copy of the book you will see what i mean. good luck, hope all this is helpful!!
