internet bullying

do you find that no matter what sites you go on there are little groups and cliques of people .
who think its ok to insult folk and have some banter.
as long as its them that start it.
if they get it back they dont like it and then the heavies get called in ,brothers ,sisters ,friends, folk who fancy them and want to score brownie points in their books.
its all a bit sad.
ive seen it before on serescape, and friggers world.
and ive been told of little groups who trawl ab looking to get posts removed or people reported.
its sad that people ,well some ,feel the need to extend themselves out into the internet and attempt to manipulate and control people.
are they gods?
opr do they just percieve themselves as all knowing?
any opinions.
im sure some of the guilty will answer.
any of the impartial like to join in?

As long as you're here for your own reasons and happy to post or lurk then by my reckoning it's up to the individual to take offence and eff off or stick around and ride it out. Yes, bullying does take place online. However, there is a certain amount of paranoia and insecurity that goes with reading words on a screen and not being able to gauge (feel free to correct my spelling) the authors sentiment. It's sometimes difficult to portray playfullness and sarcasm to the reader.
If a comment is not made directly to you ie. using your name then I say grow up. It's only a game show.
This is NOT real life. Yes, real friendships are formed but there are far more things to worry about than someone being mean to you.
I'm a woman, we can get a bad wrap on this site. I'm in a relationship with another woman. Once again, there have been some hysterically ignorant posts re sexuality on this site. I'm also upwars of a size 16. I take no offence to the comments that are made. Bored of them? Absolutely. Offended. I think not.
Now then leg end. Medication tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime

Sometimes it's easier to just read it and move on legend but there have been times when I will challenge what is written, only because I don't agree with it.. the same as I would challenge it in reality. It's just called having an opinion.. people should be able to say what they feel, debate it and then be mature enough to move on without holding a grudge.
yes you're quite right, there are cliques on here, and probably a lot of them are related/ know each other in real life. and sometimes i get confused when folk slag each other off, dont alway know if its fun or serios.
but i its just a site, you shouldnt take any notice of bullying on here. i get a lot of stick from a certain king on here, but its just friendly banter. (I hope, anyway)

i dont find it on many other sites to be honest .. maybe the othr internet people i talk with are a bit more open to other points of view. I personally cant really see the point of, for example the responses you've had already to this question, just being rude (although i am aware thats probably a bit hypocritcal seeing as i never put my nice hat on on here). I think its very bogus if you are critisizing someone just because other people don't like them ... at least be your own person, but its k to have an opposing point of view or to dislike the things that people say because you dislike them. Im not being very eloquent here i realise so i hope you understand what i mean
bednobs is right there, what people seem to forget is that AB is an anonymous site in many ways. MSN is the place to get to know people, or my space, AB is not here for that sole purpose therefore if we know one another it is not because we are AB members alone. That does not mean however that we are not going to feel an affinity with people we know beyond this site,
I think alot of people on here need to get other interests and not spend so much time here. I use this site for its intended purpose, to get a question answered and maybe help people out if I can, or if there is an issue raised which I feel strongly about. I couldnt care less about petty squabbles and it looks pathetic to new people joining the site. When I first joined I was victim to some ****-taking for no other reason than the people in question are spiteful old cowbags, and I have seen them do it many times since to new members.
I will continue to use this site because thankfully there are some great members who give really helpul advice. The rest of the muppets can go and get a life. And I bet they know who they are.

thankfully i know you are not referering to me alijangra, but i think there is a serious problem on this site with people having an issue about the age of people, m,aybe there is a group of users on here who think that the internet is a no go area for people over 40? Why would you be so insulying to people like that alijangra? i don't understand why you feel it is necessary to refer to someone's age as an insult?
Gotta agree with alijangra, If all folks do when they come on AB is argue then you've got to wonder what exactly they are getting from the site?
I personally come on 'ere to read often very funny and entertaining questions and answers and yes ok damn it I occasionally chat (probably too much!). I couldn't bear it if each time I came here I got into a slanging match with someone.
Also- have the people who do post nasty/childish/ pathetic (take your pick!) thought how their comments look to an outsider? Many many folks visit the site, not all post on it. I'd be mortified if someone (other than who it was intended for) read anything nasty I'd written.
Mr Boo often looks over my shoulder as im nosying round AB, however i refuse to open B&S whilst he's looking, I'm often ashamed of the whole category.

If someone has started a debate, then it's OK to argue on the topic in question. But I've seen examples here and elsewhere, where contributors have been called stupid (among other things) for holding the views they do. Then people agree just because they happen to be friendly with the person who said it, not necessarily because it's a view they hold. And that's not OK. People should stick to the question and not get personal, because when they do, it shows them up for the ignoramus they really are.
There's a particular saxophone forum I visit which is moderated (solely) by some dictatorial bully of a bloke who deletes anything he doesn't agree with (or posted by anyone he doesn't like) - and that's a lot. The worrying thing is that many of the contributors are impressionable, gullible even, teenage music students who hang on his every word and blindly follow him in ganging up on anyone who dares to suggest that, perhaps, he mightn't be the big 'I am' that he thinks he is.
I've seen this same person's name around other sites, spouting just the same rubbish he spouts on 'his' forum (it's not actually his - he just co-erced the owner into sacking the last mod and letting him do it). Fortunately most sax players are of a reasonably grounded breed and either ignore him or give him as good as he sends, but I really think he only frequents internet forums in order to get his little power trip. If he really is a teacher, as he says he is, I suspect he's not a very effective one because his students would be terrified of him.
Unfortunately that site is by no means the only one I've come across, but on the majority of sites I stick around moderating is done by a team who also act as moderators to each other and who are known and may be approached directly.

dot - using the word 'old' before an insult, doesn't usually refer to age, it is just a turn of phrase.
unless the insult is hag or something age relevant, of course.
its like saying 'you silly little cow' or 'you little b*tch' - you are not saying the person is literally little are you!
i would use either phrase to anyone of any stature or age, so don't take it so personally.
