My guess is that we'd be better off without it. It does cause and exacerbate a lot of misery. Same goes for drugs / cigarettes. I'd ban them all on libertarian grounds.
I personally think that none of the mood altering substances (alcohol included) are either the cause or the answer. all substances in taken in moderation, in my opinion can bring enjoyment. If problematic use of any substance is evident in an individual, then the question should be why are they taking it. excessive use of any subtance, or addiction, even, usually occurs in an individual to mask some unhappiness which the problematic user has not addressed, or may even be unaware of.
for me, alcohol was both the cause and the cure...i quit drinking 15 years ago. i still have issues in my life, but when sober i find i do more than deal with my probelms...i learn from them, too.
Personally I think that its the cause. Anyone who seriously thinks that the answer to their problems will be in the bottom of the bottle really does need help, and having a hangover the next day doesn't make things look any brighter!!!
Drowning your problems in a drink is no way to solve them. They'll still be there when you sober up.
