I just left my cat at the vets..
30 Answers
after saying goodbye to him and stroking him as he was put to sleep.
He was suffering with the usual old aged cat thing ~ kidney cancer. Sonny was with us for just a year. He wandered in a couple of weeks after our other cat had died, and he certainly lessened the pain of our loss. A big character, chatty & loving.
Part of me is so glad to have given him a comfortable last year of his life, but I shall miss him so very much. I am crying like a baby...any comforting words?

I have had a few experiences like you, first one was 25yrs ago, a much loved dog called Brandy, lovely family pet, had her put to sleep because of cancer.Next cat called Jinksy was run over right outside my house. Then Puss Puss an old cat, came to sat goodbye to me whilst I was watching TV then 1 hour later found him dead in the linen basket. Now I have two cats one is 14 and other 17, the eldest one is very doddery, Im dreading the day. I have given all my pets the best I can, it is all you can do. It is OK to be sad, your cat will now be with my pets in the great cat and dog paradise.
aww pippa im sorry to hear that. (((hugs)))
You gave him a lovely year and was with him when he went to sleep and what you did was much kinder than letting him suffer. I know how you feel I had to have my dog put to sleep about 20 years ago. He had had distemper as a puppy and had gotten over it but it left him with something called chorea that caused him to have fits all the time. I felt the kindest thing to do was to have him put to sleep. I cried like a baby for such a long time afterwards but I know I did the right thing.

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth, and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.
While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.
He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well don't just stand there, come on in!

Pippa,
I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your poor cat. It was only a few weeks ago that I posted the same thing in pets, alot of ABers left some really amazing replies, that made me feel alot better about the decision my sister and I had to make, and the replies really helped me see abit clearer, but I received an awful reply from one of the other ABers so I don't go back to that thread anymore.
like warpig said 'He wandered into you life when you needed him and he needed you'. He will forever be by your side.

Awwww Pippa - you poor thing.
I have always had cats and the pain when they die is just dreadful . I have had two of mine ran over in front of my eyes and it took me weeks to get over it. It sounds like you made his last year very very happy and you should be proud of that.
Big big hugs to you xxxxx

Oh Pippa, my thoughts are with you at this distressing time. Nothing anyone says will make you feel better or take away the pain, you have to grieve for your loss honey. Take your time to reflect and mourn Sonny. You gave him the best love and care you could albeit for such a short time - having a loved pet put to sleep is always gut wrenching - I lost my lab after 13 years just before xmas last year, and Im still crying....they are part of you, part of your family and take up such a great part of your life - unconditionally.
Take it easy honey,
Cry as much as you need to.

thats funny my old cat was called sonny and I had him 19 years from when I was 2 until 21. he was so affectionate. I now have another cat who is exactly the same as Sonny was and I know if I lost him I would be devestated as he was a baby replacement. big hugs it takes time but like any loss it will get a bit easier. and a good excuse to go and get another beautiful kitten.
So sorry Pippa!
We had a big black cat called Sam who liked most of all to sit on my wife's lap. Then, one day, he suddenly stopped doing that. A few days later we had the news that my wife was pregnant with our first child. I am sure that Sam new before we did!
Shortly after that, Sam was diagnosed with cancer. I felt that he had decided it was time to for him to go and make way for the new arrival.
Eventually, the time came for the vet to give him the final injection! That was 13 years ago and I have tears in my eyes now as I write this! Sorry, not much comfort am I?

Following on from Miss Inquiry, I imagine he has even better things to do in Moggy Heaven like sh4gging loads of horny felines.
Here's a poem I have just written especisally for you.
Moggy, moggy moggy.
When it was raining he got all soggy
He used to chase mice in the boggy
And meowed at the local doggy.
Now he is in cat heaven
And gets tuna and rabbit pie at Seven
Sh4gs local tabbies for ever
And gets his ears tickled by a soft feather
He looks down from heaven on Pippa
Smiles and meows with a salmon flavoured dippa
Thinks what a wonderful last year he had
So there's no need to be sad.

My heart really goes out to you today.
I have looked after a feral cat at my work for the past 18 years and she is very poorly just now. Stone deaf, I suspect she also has failing kidneys and to make things worse, a growth appeared under her right ear two weeks ago, which is getting bigger.
Well, she has never been handled by humans and to get her to the vets would probably kill her anyway.
She sleeps ouside our work in a cat bed, she has two and I have been on holiday for the past week, so I am dreading returning to work tomorrow as I know her condition will have deteriorated.
I feel ready to let her go now and be in peace.
I hope she just sleeps away just as she lived. Free as a bird but had good food and around lots of people who loves her.
God Bless
