Correct Punctuation

I know this will get moved - I've put it in Art and Literature as well - but I need a quick answer,

Where would the apostrophe in the word 'artists' go in the following sentance - before or after the "s";
"The possibility of having a permanent display of local artists work for sale"

I've put it before, as the work belongs to the artist, but my collegue thinks it may be after the S.

It depends on whether the artist is one person or a group of artists.

If you're referring to a singular artist then it would be artist's. But if it is more than one artist you are talking about it would be artists'.

If you are worried about errors on a public notice, why not reword it to avoid apostrophes altogether

In your sentence as written, because the sense is plural, it would be artists'

I should add that my punctuation is always a wee bit dodgy as I suffered from the experimental period in english education when they decided grammar and punctuation was not as important. as the content!

No Champers - Wardy rang them up and gave them a hard time on my behalf too - I tried several times and I got a very rude letter from them basically saying 'How dare I think that Helibeds were being unreasonable'.
So all I can say is don't use Hellibeds!
