terrible backache
6 Answers
Hi im suffering from terrible backache, which i did have before i was pregnant anyway.
I am 29 weeks.
It is keeping me from sleeping, walking any length of time etc etc. I was just wondering as we are only allowed paracetamol (which isnt working) if it would be okay to use the deep heat sprays or cream? This may be a defo no no. Anyone know? Thanks in advance

Do you sleep on a hard bed? If so, you will probably need to get a soft topper. I like a very firm bed and also liked to have a nap on the floor from time to time. When I was pregnant I ended up with sacroiliac hip disfunction because of lying on the hard surfaces! By the time my baby was due, I could barely walk, couldn't carry anything and could only get up stairs by crawling - this also caused problems during delivery as I was very restricted in the positions i could get into and I ended up with an emergency c-section. The problems disapeared within days of the baby being born, and because I knew better , my second pregnancy was a lot better, but I still have hip weakness from this.
So what I am saying is - get it checked out now - pain killers etc will only mask the problem.
I know that you said you had this before you were pregnant, but the pregnancy hormones will make it worse and you need to get some help.
Best of luck
p.s. not sure about the deep heat etc, but I would guess you should not use it - what does it say on the leaflet? What about a warm pad or hot water bottle or leaning your back against the radiator while sitting on a stool or a chair with the back turned to the side.

Thank you,
i have been to the doc and midwife and they both are putting it down to me being so small ( just under 5ft) that baby is making room in my tummy. The pains in my top back is maybe something touching the sciatic nerve and thats why i have the shooting pains and numbness in my right leg.
My next appointment i will ask about what you suffered from though just incase. My bed is probably not perfect either mind you.
Thanks again

Hope you get some help - it is unlikely to be exactly what I had unless the pain is in your hip and leg, but you can get the same thing in other joints, just called something else. A friend had it in her pubic bone and had to wear a bump support and walked with crutches!!!
I would deninitely try a mattress topper - they weren't so common when I was pregnant, so the doc told me to double over a duvet and lie on top of that - it did help, but considering my son was born in July and I was sandwiched between 2 duvets every night , I was absolutely roasting!
I am a lot taller than you, but I had a massive bump and a 9lb 13oz baby

i would try a heat pad as its not really gonna affect you or the baby in a bad way but make sure you just run it by your midwife or doctor first. have you seen a doctor about this as i dont want to worry you but my friend had this same kind of pain and she couldnt sleep or walk too far, it had a special name which i cant remember now but its not very worrying, and it will go once youve given birth. i wish you all the best
