Painting a stone fireplace

I have a stone fireplace which has been previously painted. I stripped off the old paint and now want to repaint it white.
Ive put 3 coats of white masonry paint on the stone surround but when it dries yellowish stains are showing through. Why is this happening and what can I do about it?
