when I close my eyes to go to sleep - I see these weird 'things' moving around. They appear to be random shapes and textures. Ive always seen these things - just wondered if everyone else sees them or am I bonkers? What are these things, how are they produced, whats their name etc etc - thanks

are you perhaps seeing the blood moving around in your eyelids... not exactly an everyday occurance but i have noticed it before. If not then yup your utterly bonkers ... keep up the good work (",)
hey i dont know what they are either, but i see them when i close my eyes too. so if you are bonkers then so am i.yay!
They are random fragments of skin cells that have been there since birth. I'm not sure if they are added to as the body grows, but they are a leftover from your eyes' formation in the womb. i know there is a name for them, but I don't know what it is. Don't worry, everyone can see them!

thanks for your answers in response to them being blood or skin cells - I find it hard to accept that - as the patterns actually look like they are made of light. Its hard to describe. Think of a black/red background and a blurry, moving, dim lightshow
I certainly don't want to worry you, but - in diabetics at least - such eyes-closed light-shows can be a sign of very low blood-glucose levels. Have you had any other actual eyesight problems recently? For example, is the far end of the High Street not quite as clear as it used to be? Been unusually thirsty of late? If so, I would certainly advise a visit to your GP. A website such as this is certainly not the place to seek advice about medical problems! I truly hope, therefore, that you have no such problems and that the other suggestions above are the reason for your "symptoms".
I get them too and have done for as long as I can remember - but only if I'm very tired or ill. (I get similar patterns if I rub my eyes, but they don't move, they just gradually fade.) If you're getting them all the time I agree with QM - get checked out.
Sounds like the same thing as I see when I close and press my eyes. Almost like a firework display or kelidoscope. When I was a kid I used to entertain myself in bed with a little light show before I went to sleep, or some times they looked like moving stars as if I was flying through a galaxy.
