Modern medicine keeps people alive who would naturaly have died as a result of their illness, allowing them to breed and produce children who may be prone to the same illnesses.
In the natural world, sick animals are more likely to die before they get a chance to breed, so the population is kept healthy by offspring being more likely to be born from healthy parents.
Similarly, in domesticated animals, we select the most healthy specimens to breed from. Sick animals are either euthanised, or not permitted to breed.
We are becoming the most unhealthy animal on the planet.
