Woke up to water lapping round the front door and a river type water in the road . Police are doing a good job and nobody has ventured out yet. How has the rain affected your area and your wellbeing ?
oh mamma!
I hope it hasnt got past your front door! Have you got sand bags? i think the council should hand them out.
Its sunny here in suffolk at the mo but we had a lot of rain at weekend.
The rain didnt cause too much of a problem for us although we did get a little wet when we took baby CRX to see thomas the tank engine yesterday. babyCRX wasnt bothered by it though, he loved seeing his friends and seeing the trains and the fat controller.
morning, not too bad here at the mo, the rivers flooded again but not as bad as last week when the army was out rescueing people and my local got toatlly flooded and is now closed for 2 months!!!!!
Hi redcrx love, its got into a few houses near me but my front step is stopping it and as long as the traffic stays away it may stay calm and keep out.
Thomas the tank engine is great for the little ones isn't it .xx
Morning Bigmamma, that doesnt sound too good! I was chucking it down here as well all weekend and I must admit it did affect my well being, very depressing:-o(
Should I watch the news later on to see you (in obligatory nightie and wellies) and dog getting rescued by firemen?
Hi mccluff, getting your local flooded sounds bad ! I think it must be blocked drains or a broken pump to blaim here this morning as we aren't really near a river like you. :-)
Yesterday was very very wet, and all the more depressing for a leaking conservatory roof, buckets and rags. However, I got to work indoors to the accompaniment of a 12-tape detective mystery which was very absorbing.
This morning so far dry, touch wood, this area is apparently in the eye of the storm. It sounds like the wretched Midlands are going to cop it again.
Beofre I became a lady of leisure I often had to leave my house at 6am to walk to work but if it was raining I had to go at 5.30 because the easy way to work was always flooded. The first time I realised this I knew we had guys coming to fit a new alarm system at 6.30 so I had to roll up my trousers and wade through, it was horrid and I have no intention of ever doing that kinda thing again.
When I got up this morning I found that two windows in the lounge were pouring with rain, all over the TV and furniture, these windows have never rained in before, but the wind is so strong and my house is in a field and high up. I have got towels all over the place and they are fast becoming saturated,.....ah well the great British summer !!
Apart from a fire a flood must be the most distressing thing. The alarming thing about floods these days is that places not experiencing this before are getting it now. When you buy and sell houses there is more emphasis on your flood risk to warn you but I wonder how accurate they are. Our old house was deemed to be on flood plain. I complained about this as we were actually the highest road in our area and at least 100 feet above the flood plain. As my buyer knew very well where we were he laughed it off.
You can check your own risk from rivers and seas on the environment site. But because we build intensively in towns, and pave front gardens, preventing absorbtion, we will see 'flood' water from intensive rain lapping around our front doors more often.
At this time of the year torrential rain doesn't cause too many problems, in the autumn when the leaves fall off the trees heavy rain washes them down the hill and blocks the drains and we get 2 feet of water at the bottom of our road. I always paddle down with a rake and unblock them as my elderly neighbour actually gets trapped in her house. It's actually a very satisfying job as is goes just like water going down the plughole but the 'hole' in the centre of the vortex is about 2 feet across!!!
Thankyou for your answers rabbitygirl and Hellyon :-) xx
Water has been going down here since police opened some manhole covers in the roads . I managed to get to an appointment I had at 11 and , although wet , I have made it home again.
