growth in labrador

My friend has a 11 year old labrador, in good health apart from having had a growth in her tummy for around 6 months now, around the size of an apple, and it hasnt grown in size since she first noticed it. Now another one has appeared in around her teet (she has had two litters), she also has a small growth that is bothering her in between her toes. She is undecided on whether to let the vet operate or not as she has heard that once the air gets inside her more growths will appear? Havnt heard this one before, anyone any ideas? Her vet has not offered much advice, other than saying she can operate if she wants to.

If the growth round her teat is a mammary tumour I had a greyhound bitch operated on at 11 to remove one and she lived until nearly 14.

These days the anaesthetics are easily reversible and are not such a problem in older dogs, so if the vet can operate I would say go for it, unless the bitch is either very decrepit or very poorly.

If she has the mammary tumour operated on, they would probably be able to do the one between her toes at the same time.

Not heard the one about the air before either!

I suspect it is a mammary tumour, although of course it may be benign now, but turn malignant, which is a chance she has to weigh up. She is speaking to her vet tonight, but I dont rate her vet's opinion anyway. Thanks for the advice about the 'air' !! She was told some years ago that labrador's are prone to growth's and once they are opened up, they have lost them?

My 8 year old labrador developed a lump on her chest/tummy and the vet removed it successfully. Thankfully, it was a benign lipoma (fatty lump), but these things can turn malignant if not treated. My dog was more upset at having to wear a bright pink compression bandage afterwards, as the operation site developed some fluid. I have never heard the old wives' tale about air and I can't see any logical reason why people should think this.Opt for the op - it's only fair to your dog.

In humans, surgery to remove malignant tumours can sometimes accelerate the onset of secondaries. I believe this is because of the chance of malignant cells migrating round the body.
The air thing is, of course, rubbish.

perhaps that is what they meant, removal of some tumours will promote the onset of others? She has just called to say the vet has looked her over and she has 'several' lumps and bumps consistent with an 11 year old labrador, whatever that is supposed to mean, and has recommended they leave them be while she is well.

hi Megan, sorry, I have come off the site altogether, I did send you a few messages but you didnt respond and you were the only sane member on there. I thought some of the articles and messages on the forum were bizarre to say the least. I had a few words with Gavin and decided to come off as I didnt want to be associated with it. Did you ever get the chance to look at the photos? The girls are ok, still looking for a boyfriend puppy for them, have been offered several from abroad, as far away as Russia!!! xx

HI JULES, & GIRLS !! , We are so pleased to hear from you, jules i think that S.S.P. could be having technical difficulties, Burty has not received any messages for some time, he sends them out but gets no reply.
I do agree Jules the forum is a bit odd/unusual, i can not understand some of the topics, Jules we tried to get the pic's up of the girls, but all we got was , internet Explorer can not display the web page.
