Using baking soda for teeth whitening

Can this be abrasive and damage the enamel of your teeth? Or is it safer to use that whitening toothpastes?

In fact, come to think, Richard and Judy did an item on teeth whitening oo their show a while ago. Comparing different methods to get the pearly-whites of which we all dream. One of their guinea-pigs brushed their teeth with baking soda for a week or so. Is a very good natural cleanser. So as far as i can see it is fine to use. Enamel Very hard....
