A photocopy should never be acceptable as proof of ID.
There is no legislation which prohibits the reproduction of the personal details page in a UK passport. A photocopy may be required by some organisations for their records.
The Identity and Passport Service actually suggests that passport holders record the information on the personal details page (such as a photocopy) and keep it in a safe place separate to the passport. This will help the Identity and Passport Service process an application for a replacement passport if the current passport is lost or is stolen...
A passport is not proof of ID as it's not got your address on it ..If you are a student you should have a student ID or a bus pass . Which will state your age .
Beware of wear and tear if carrying your passport to lots of pubs and clubs. . My son was arrested on a train by immigration police in Budapest because a corner of the plastic covering his photo had peeled away.
He was handed over to reluctant regular cops for a couple of days while a new passport was arranged. He was a bit concerned but they became friends, giving tours of the city in cop cars and free bed and board. In exchange he gave English lessons including joke telling!!!

I always photocopy everything (my ID card, passport and driving licence) but if I'm stopped I tell them immediately that they are copies and I that can produce the orignal as soon as they like. I'm always losing things. So far, it's always been accepted by traffic cops, local and national police.
theonlyone - opening a bank/building society account requires two pieces of ID because one is to prove your identity (such as a passport) and the other must have your address to comply with anti money laundering regulations.

I do not recall that a student ID card (your alternative suggestion) has your address on it either.
It is now illegal to employ anyone without proof of id and this can be a photocopy of a passport, my company accepts the photocopies and keeps them in the individual file at H.O.
