What age did you fly the nest..?

A question posted yesterday about a 24yr old with a mortgage got me thinking that I was his age when I first moved out my parents and got my own place. However it was the late 80's and getting a mortgage and buying property was pretty easy back then. So how old was you when you decided to take the plunge and move out of your parents house and go it alone as a tennent or owner? With rising house prices and difficulties getting onto the property ladder these days are we staying with our parents for longer?

I'm 22 and still love living at home, but I've been asked to move into a lovely house with my two best friends and I'm still struggling to say "yes", LOL! I'll have to 'take the plunge' sooner or later, though...

I left home at 19, saddled with a mortgage at 21, lots of unfortunate stuff happened so repossessed at 24, been a tenant ever since!!.
I feel I missed out on the great benefits of living at home and not paying major bills, my brother still lives at home (22) and he is minted!!, I would have moved out later if I could do it again!!!

I left home at 11 to go into borstal, sorry school.
But the parents apron strings were firmly cut at 18 when I was on a military sponsorship I guess.
They still however insist on giving me a few quid every now and then and casually slip money in to my pockets!!!!! They really are quite stupid, bless their hearts.

I left at 26, and then returned one year later as a "tenant" and rented the second floor apartment from mom. The apt was empty as it needed work and I needed a place, so it worked well. About 5 years ago (at 32) I bought out my father's half and owned it with mom. Due to her terminal illness, I know am sole owner on paper, but we share mortgage, etc.
I do think people stay at home longer. In New York City (not manhattan) a one bedroom apartment goes for at least $1000. per month plus utilities. Who can afford that if you are just out of college/uni? Somedays I wish I still had my old bedroom back it was much simpler too.....

i bought a house with my boyfriend ( with a joint mortgage) when i was 18 (in 1990) but although I owned the house my parents didnt like the idea of us living together and wanted us to marry. I stayed living at mum and dads for about a year after i bought my own place until they eventually let me move in officially.
I was homeless at age 15, moved into a hostel aged 16, moved in with a mate at 17, moved city at 18 to go to college and rented somewhere, got made homeless again before last exam, got a flat and started uni at 19, made homeless again at 20 for arrears in rent due to tower block being a nesting area for smack heads who tried to get their claws into me, spent 2 weeks on streets then got in another hostel, hostelled it for year and a half. Been in secure employment for government for 2 and a half years and am now renting a beautiful penthouse apartment over 2 floors with a balcony with views of Corstorphine hill and fife in the distance with another 2 part time paid jobs and 4 voluntary jobs I would say I have got my life well and truely sorted out considering at 21 I'd been homeless for 1/6th of my life!
