Cancer treatment for prisoners
5 Answers
I don't know if this is the right section for this question but I can't see where else it might go. Sorry if its wrong.
We have been watching quite a few of these FBI and other crime programmes on the Crime and Investigation channel on cable. Quite often they say that a prisoner died in jail of cancer, notable examples being John Gotti and Reggie Kray.
My mother died of cancer a few years ago. Like the other suffers she got to know, she was offered a whole range of treatments including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc. I have been wondering whether serving prisoners are offered the same.
I suspect not. We don't hear of prisoners undergoing specialist cancer care. I suspect they are just diagnosed and then told there is nothing that can be done except pain relief. Perhaps I've got it horribly wrong and they are offered treatment.
We are not particularly bothered by the issue but just curious. Does anyone know?

Prisoners are very aware of their human rights and most make sure they get them.
And prisoners have a huge advantage - guaranteed dental care.

Incidentally, Reggie Kray did not die in prison. He died in a hotel.

Thank you Ethel, we didn't know that -especially about the dental care. You certainly answered our question. I know Reggie Kray was released a short while before he died (and I believe he died in a hotel in Ipswich). But we weren't sure whether he would have undergone or been offered much treatment before he reached the point where they released him on compassionate grounds.
I must say Ethel, it's always a pleasure to read your answers as they always seem to comprehensively answer the points.
Thanks as well jno.
