Supermarket snobbery

I normally go to Sainsburys each week, but decided to do Asda for a change today without appearing overly snobby it felt like doing my shop with the audience of the Jeremy Kyle show. Perhaps it was just the store location?

Are there any supermarkets you wouldnt be seen dead in?
I for one would rather starve than go into Lidl's for anything.

i think its like when you go to supermarkets abroad and it looks odd in general because you don't recognise any of the packaging - then you spot a familiar brand.

thats all this stuff usually is, the stuff they sell in other countries

We used to buy our beer from Aldi when I was in the Army stationed in Germany, it was stack it high + sell it cheap, they have gone slightly upmarket in the UK believe it or not

the one by me also sells kids toys and clothes, electricals, computer supplies, gardening stuff, tools, kicthen stuff, plants etc.

To Nannan what do you mean by the riff raff. I am certainly not from the riff raff but certainly would not buy veg from lidls you buy it cheap cheap and next day it has gone off Never had any problems with asda shopping .Aways goes back to the saying buy cheap you get cheap and thats exactly what lidls and aldi are.

i have bought fresh veg from lidl and it was fine... if you check it first and make sure its still in good nick , same as you would in any other place, its fine.

neither lidl, nor asda, can control the inevitable decay of fresh food, it all goes off eventually, and all shops will occasionally have stuff on dislay that is past its best.
they do not have shelves heaped with rotten mulch!

all this is just because it has a ''funny'' non-english name that people assume must mean crap.

admittedly it is not as 'fancy' as sainsburys etc but i would say its about the level of kwicksave.

Lidl is actually brilliant, and there is a girl on the checkouts with haunting eyes. Their bourbon lookalike is a bit rough, but good everyday basics like budweiser are very cheap.

Our local ASDA is one those WalMart megamarket type things. It's huge. I have to say, the quality isn't necessarily that good (I prefer Sainsbury's) but the experience is the best around. As it's so big, the aisles are also much bigger. This means that more than 2 trolleys can circumnavigate the same aisle at the same time. And if you meet some old friend then stopping to talk to them (no. 1 pet hate) doesn't cause tail backs and/or blood pressure problems.

That said, for the 'bits and bobs' shop, going to such a place is stupid. So I either use a Tesco Metro down the road which is quite nice (they pack your bags for you) or.... the Co-op... Now these guys have really surpassed themselves in terms of customer alienation. I need a good dose of ACE inhibitors before entering. Incompetent staff, horrendous stock control, mile long queues while 'supervisors' just stare blankly into space. And they're not that cheap either. But I'm lazy and it's convenient.

to wedilla - i shop in ASDA! i wasnt causing offence. Its just where i live, the closest one is oin a not very nice area and th'riff-raff' i refer to are the people who some shopping in their slippers, dressing gowns, have about 5 children running around - having major domestics in the store,
I dont buy veg from lidels, i but it fro the fruit and veg shop down the road. I said i may buy continental cheese and ham from aldi or lidel because it is lovely and a good price,.befor you have adig at someone read theri answer properly - OK?

At the end of the day it is down to personal choice , finances , and how close the shop is to you . Now bored , goodbye .

I have just started shopping at booths rather than sainsbury's because it is nearly all local produce. Will buy cleaning stuff from somewhere like wilkinsons though

I have never actually been to Lidl's - but my experiences of the shop so far have been

a/ Skanky loud mouth mum at school telling me I can get baked beans (the devils food !)in there for 8p a can

b/ Bloke at work telling me he had bought a bottle of Gin and there was saw dust on the floor in the aisles

I appreciate good value but am slightly suspicious non the less at canned goods for 8p

we have both here my mother veers towards lidls, but for service aldis, and there food is superb ok you maybe not find british food the predominant thing, but introduces you do other flavours from around the world, getting fed up with you snobby foodies, take a chance you will be surprised!!!

the same people who supply the meat to m&s also supply morrisons, so you could be paying(for argument sake) �10 a kilo for one leg of lamb and one of the other legs from the same sheep would cost you �3.00 kilo in morrisons, so it is really all snobbery, asda donuts 25 for 99p are frozen and are the same as all the other stores,its all in the mind, i remember a lady wanting most a bloomer loaf but the store didnt have any so they offered her a hedghog loaf, the same bread but with spikes on, and she said no because it wasnt the same at all! most stores have the same supplier it just has their own label on

I am trying to see your point here but how can a tin of Lidls beans costing 8p and a tin of say Hienz at 45p taste the same, or even be exactly the same but with different labels?

black noir, maybe your mate seen the sawdust on the floor because someone had broken a bottle and it was there to soak up the contents before anyone fell and put in a claim!!

Gina it is the same principle as Bentley vrs. Seat.

Better transportation, better cuts of lamb, better packaging, lesser sell by dates, better refridgeration, better presentation. less additives.

I am not completely aware of the whole meat process, nor other foodstuffs come to that but the fact of the matter is M&S sell better quailty food than Morrisons, or whoever use the same lamb.

It is not snobbery, it is a fact.

I will bet my house that if you gave me a Pepsi Challenge (look it up if you are under 25 years old) I will tell you which lamb came from where.
