If the "blackbox" flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn't the whole damn airplane made out of that stuff?

Possibly because it would make the plane so heavy that it would need larger fuel tanks and larger amounts of fuel and therefore less passenger space. This would lead to more polluting, louder, less safe and more expensive planes, which would make flying cost prohibitive for most people and airlines.
