Do women still expect, or like, a man to be chivalrous or more importantly do men like to be chivalrous towards women? It seems to be a lost art, at least with many of the men I know, I'd quite like to be treated with care and consideration.
I know you men out there are probably thinking that we women have brought it on ourselves and that we can't have everything our way, but I think the world was a better place to live in when a man opened the car door for you and then helped you out, when he gave up his seat on the bus or paid for dinner.
What do you think?

I think politeness and good manners should go both ways. That seems to be a lost art as well. I know when my daughters have boyfriends picking them up, I definately prefer the ones that actually come to the door and not just hoot outside! It beggards belief that people don't stand up on buses for old people and pregnant women. On the paying for dinner thing though, I think women should pay sometimes with the men paying perhaps 75% of the time. After all, on the whole women do get paid less.
love chilvary, it should be brought back, come on ladies we love it!

I agree puddicat, my father would be horrified if he knew that men no longer displayed good manners, he was a gentleman of the old school, but never patronising.
I do like a bit of chivalry. I think it has to do with having "manners" in general, like having respect for others, property...etc. I know I would never go out with a man who spits in public, for example, or never shows little attentions like opening the door or complimenting me. I really believe you only get on with people who have been brought up in a similar way as yourself, anyway.
My hubby has always been like this. He always holds the door open for me, takes my coat, carries the shopping and doesn't even batter an eyelid when I ask him to hold my handbag for me.
He even used to go round and unlock the car door and hold it open for me, that was until we got a car with central locking :o)

wingnut your husband sounds lovely, I want one like that!
Me too! But then, wingnut is lovely anyway, so that just proves my theory! ;O)
From a personal point of view, I like to pay for half, if the decision to go out was a joint decision.

The whole opening a car door, pulling back a chair (so the woman can sit down, not from under her!!) and paying for the meal etc is a dying art but should only take place when the guy is being romantic and generally treating his wife/partner.
Although I am a very independent woman, there's a part of me that likes to be girly and feel a sense of security & protection from my fiance (and to receive the odd 'I saw this and thought of you' gift) Romance isn't dead, just out of fashion!

Giving up your seat on a bus/train? - I don't think it matters who you are, if there's someone who looks like they need the seat more than you do, then it's only good manners to do so.

Same with holding open doors. Maybe, if enough of us hold open a door for the next person, then they just might start doing it too.
~wingnut~ .. would you be interested in a trade? :P
I have no time for all this PC crap, whenever I am with a lady, I open the door, I help her on with her coat and and open the car door etc I also always pay for meals etc, I never expect a lady to pay, and I will always give up my seat on a bus or train and I think most women appreciate being treated properly, with respect, now you can all tell me what a twonk I am, but do I care ? no I don't give a monkeys chuff, I will carry on in my own way.
Well I think you sound lovely raysparkx1. I wish my daughters could find someone as nice sounding as you!
As lovely as always, Ray! :O)
I hear you have a couple of nice sons too....Could you possibly send one my way? ;O)

PS: can you tell I'm in a "happy" mood? lol
oooo ray , iv'e gone weak at the knees !!!!! :-) x
Hi Pirate, doubt you would want me for a son-in-law I am in my fifties, lol, but neither of my sons have settled down yet and they are late 20s and early 30s and treat ladies the same way as I do, but they tell me lots of Girls/women now expect to pay, it is beyond me, but you are right to expect men to treat them with respect,
Ok, thats sorted then. I'll have you and two sons for two daughters.......Perfect!!!!!
Seriously though....It can be very difficult for girls to know what to do. My two are 20 and 21 and they have actually been out with many boyfriends and so don't know whether they should offer to pay all, pay half or not say anything at all and pay nothing. What do men prefer?
that should read haven't
If my husband were to post on here, I know he would have said exactly the same as Ray - word for word.

He's always shown respect for us women & is what I would call a 'real' gent. -x-

I can say that about my son too smudge . Whether it's chivalry or simple good manners and thoughtfulness I like a man to have it.:-) x
Lol awww thanx ~max~ :o)
I'd better not tell him what's on here as he will get a big head and won't be able to get through the door to bring me my dinner he is currently cooking lol

No trade sorry Lore lol ;o)
