I go to specsavers and get them free. Work pay
We get them free in Scotland. All opticians have to be qualified, so I guess it doesn't matter where you go. I would pick somewhere that looks like it has the type of glasses/contacts you might want in case you need them. I think before the eye tests were free that they were about 12 - 15. A lot of opticians used to advertsise that they did them free though - I guess that they thought they would make the oney back on the glasses etc. I go to Optical Express and have always had good service.
The best people to go to are qualified ophthalmologists or optometrists. Look around your High Street for eye test prices. Each person has different experiences of each, so I couldnt recommend one optical outlet over another.
if you work with computer companies are supposed to pay for your eye test now
I've been going to Dollond and Aitchison. I have heard that Boots Opticians are also good. As I am diabetic I get free eye tests, so I don't know how much it costs. Not more than 15 though I would guess.

If you should need glasses then you can take your prescription to any optician you choose. So you can shop around for the best frames/prices. You are not obliged to buy your lenses or frames from the optician that you get your prescription from.

Thank you all for your answers, they're very helpful. I have just found a free eye test voucher on Dolland & Aitchison's site (free until the end of September), so I think I willgive them a try. Thank you all once again.
So you dont use computers at work then?
Question Author
Yes I do 4getmenot but I am self-employed. Thanks again.
oh what a bummer. As far as I knew Dolland and aitchison was quite expensive even with a voucher.
What, even if it is free, or 100% off, or 1 for the price of none?
Question Author
Haha Octavius ! They are expensive, yes 4getmenot. Without the voucher it is 27.50 for an eye test

D & A have been endlessly helpful with both of us. Last time we needed specs they had an offer where we chose a much reduced price frame and the price included the lenses. My prescription is really difficult to get right and I know I can go back for adjustments to get them just so.

I had a bad experience with specsavers, they couldn't make specs that worked for me and after about 3 tries they gave me my money back.Although Specsavers offer 2 for 1 etc when you add in the scratch resistant coatings etc which come as standard at D&A there doesn't seem much difference .

D &A were recommended to me when I was in despair of finding an optician who understood my needs.

No, I'm not being paid to advertise !!!

how much??? Jeez specsavers are well worth any money spent on them.
you dont have to have all the coatings, if you look after your glasses you dont need the scratch resistant coating
i also have quite a difficult prescription to fill and have always found specsavers very helpful and not at all pushy, i was with them for over an hour last time and the girl was very helpful and patient with me
I used Specsaver , my specs fell to bits !! went to the local optician who only wanted to sell me mega expensive frames .
A friend went to Asda , and was well pleased , so I tried them
and can't fault them .Designer frames with reactalite vario focal lens and non scratch coating for 165, brill !!!
i went to asda once and couldnt see with the prescription id been given, turns out the optician wasnt even qualified!!
