The front page would seems to vere on the side that DNA is for criminals only but what about the criminals of the future? Little Johnny currently 10 years old is a little monkey at the moment and doesn't have any DNA, when he's 13 he stabs to death a boy in the street, if he had DNA logged with the police, maybe when he is born, they would be able to trace him. Surely that's what's it for isn't it? Any innocent person has no problems. Or am I mad ? Yes I know this has been discussed before but it will keep coming up because its topical.

You really don't understand this stuff do you?

Let me give you an example.

My wife has just had a hysterectomy because she has a genetic sequence that makes here very likely (approx 80%) to develop cancer.

This is not a rare gene it's called BRCA2 and has a mate BRCA1.

The more we understand about DNA the better we get about Identifying genes like this that give you a genetic disposition to various illnesses.

You could easily carry one of these.

Would you want your employer or a potential employer to know that you did?

Do you have health insurance - would you like them to know?

What about girlfriends/boyfriends?

Would you like a mail through the post from someone saying "We've got hold of your DNA and had it analysed but if you cough up we won't send it to your Company/ insurer / girlfriend"

By the way you'll never guess who your dad really is!

If you still don't think anyone would be interested in your DNA you ought to think again!
Would Sainsburys send your wife a letter saying Mr Bloggs has just purchased 24 French Ticklers, and we understand you are on the pill, because you use one of our instore Chemists??? He is having an affair!!!

No they wouldn't!!!!

Reverandfunk, I dont think you have read my answers (all of them!) or if you have, then you have taken them out of context. Im in favour of a database that the police can search but must go through certain channels to access the info, that way you can silence the folk who shout about a police stitch up.

Jake, you've lost me now! How does the DNA and genetic illnesses affect policing and catching criminals who have murdered hundreds of people. I don't give a monkeys if the police have my DNA but I do give a monkeys if my nearst and dearst are blown up or killed by a drink driver. If it is used properly and i say PROPERLY and PROPERLY controlled, and not given to 3rd parties and for the the post man about the police man, I suggest he smoke another weed man!!
Because the Police can't keep their data secret.

If you'd bother to read my previous post you'd see that a private security company has already been in trouble for not destroying records and now the Rev wants everyones DNA on an ID card!

And no Shadow Man I'm not expecting anyone to be blackmailed by Sainsburys any more than I'm expecting Marks and Sparks to start selling drugs!

- Where the heck did you get Sainsbury's from?
From my post arguing Nectar Cards hold confidential information on people!!!!

The point is your DNA contains an awful lot of very important information about you and you can't get the genie back in the bottle.

You probably think I'm being alarmist but if I'd told you 15 years ago that cybercriminals would try to hack your PC to steal your credit card info or identity you'd have probably thought that was alarmist too. Now it's an every day fact of life.

Jake I can see what you are saying but I am sure if there were a system that was completely safe at some point it would be broken into but I am sure this would be better than nothing at all. If there is one huge catastrophe in the near future killing and maiming hundreds of people, I know what I would want. Sorry but credit and personal details can be recovered, life cannot. I do know what your wife went though by the way, I also had similar, so best regard to her on that one. And I also agree that the police would HAVE to keep it secret, even the most secret files in the CIA etc. I am sure are being bugged into but that will always be.
There is a difference

Your bank can give you a new credit card number

They can't reset your DNA

Someone in the DVLA was done for re-registering stolen cars this year.

This wouldn't be any different they certainly wouldn't keep it any more secret than the sex offenders register and
on this very website "oldgrapes" sister inlaw passed her confidential information from the sex-offenders register.

I really wish I had as much faith in the police as you do, I really do. I just don't think they're as competent as people would like to think

Shadow are you for real man? Tell me you're not.
Errrrrrrrrrrr, I hope I am for real. What part, preytell, do you question?

Obviously the police bit was a satirical diatribe on the ever-growing number of malingering marxists in the UK, butthe rest is fairly foolproof.
Question Author
Ah that's better, no "man" in that one! That's ok then.
