Why do people like music?

Years ago I read about a degree you could take, which focused specifically on the science behind music. I need to know what the study of music appreciation in this regard is actually called.
There are different factors, eg. a lot of people cannot appreciate music they do not think is 'cool' or 'hip'. Clearly musicians themselves have a wider appreciation of different genres, like myself, but there are so many different factors which result in different people liking different music. These factors can be specific to the person's relative and emotinoal history.
What is the fascinating study of all this called?
