I personally like to pretend things aren't stressful and am a very active sleeper. Also very cross in it apparently, I talk , from what I can gather, most nights and its normally telling people off or crying. Ive never punched out but I definitely walk and point my finger whilst I tell so and so off. If I'm really stressed subconciously, I have recurring running dreams too and they physically drain me the next day.
So in general if you bottle things up, you'll probably act out in your sleep.

As a child this was my mums only way of getting the truth out of me.

My husband always maintains he never dreams, simply because he cant remember doing so. I know better of course. He used to be very mobile and verbal in dreams but not so much now tho he does shout f@*k now and then.
Remember years ago he shouted loud and clear in his sleep 'of course it wont go, its go no bloddy oil in it'. And no he wasn't having car trouble at the time either.

The sudden flailing arms and legs are medically known as myoclonic jerks and are characteristic of the muscle contractions which occur as you drift into a superficial level of sleep, somewhere between consciousness and deep sleep.
As said above, it is likely that the problem becomes worse at times when someone is anxious or stressed and the problem is not abnormal.
If you suffer from this (or your bed partner does!), the best suggestion is that you aid muscular relaxation by having a hot bath before bed, by winding down at the end of the day and by taking regular exercise to use up reserves of energy within the muscles themselves. A night cap may also be beneficial as alcohol in small quantities can be a muscle relaxant, and if someone is still suffering after all that, then muscle-relaxing sedatives may be used.
